The 6th edition of Andrew Heywood's best-selling undergraduate textbook provides a clear and accessible introduction to the political creeds and doctrines that have dominated and shaped politics around the world. The author offers a clear exposition both of the historical development of each ideology and of the impact it has had on contemporary political behaviour, movements, parties and governments. In recent years, political commentators have heralded a renaissance of popular political ideology, characterised by a resurgence of issues and political traditions that many had thought obsolete. This new edition is updated throughout to take account of these developments, broadening its appeal internationally.
The book is particularly relevant for first and second year undergraduate teaching, and can be used to structure a whole course on political ideologies covering traditional ideologies (conservatism, socialism, liberalism, anarchism and fascism) as well as concepts which have developed into concrete ideologies more recently (multiculturalism, feminism and ecologism, amongst others).

An excellent introduction to political ideologies. It discusses Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism (including Marxism), Nationalism, Fascism, Anarchism, Feminism, Ecologism, and Religious Fundamentalism, with a couple of paragraphs about Globalism and Post-modernism. I learned a lot and I'm planning to check the 'further reading' list available at the end of each chapter.
Highly recommended for those interested in understanding the basics of the aforementioned ideologies.

I am having book-destiny these days (I'm not sure if such a term exists; if it does not, what I meant, 'when one gets a lot of brilliant books to read one after another')
Outstanding book in ever aspect, author explained, in intelligent and lucid manner, the difference of political ideologies. However I do feel he could have explained Communism and Marxism separately instead of clubbing them under Socialism, which made understanding Left-wing philosophy slightly complicated.

The greatest strength in this textbook lies in its organization. Political ideologies are messy as hell, and Heywood does as good a job as I can think of at presenting them in an accessible way. Each substantive chapter follows the same format: (1)the history of the ideology is briefly presented, then (2)the core concepts that are fundamental to that ideology are presented, then (3)some of the different manifestations (or splinters, as I think of them...more

Useful for studying for A2 Government and Politics, but very wordy and difficult to read in long periods of time; also not something you can simply dip into for reference - but still worth a read for a comprehensive understanding of a broad spectrum of political ideologies.

Given the breadth, the coverage of each ideology understandably lacks depth, yet the dense and lucid writing more than makes up for it and, overall, this is a very enjoyable yet intellectually stimulating read, despite being a textbook.

Finally, I finished this reading. Andrew Heywood presented a very good example of a systematic introduction-type book. I lacked to have a holistic knowledge of political ideologies. From time to time on the media and on the books related to economics, I was experiencing ideological approaches to the things and always feeling the need to fill the gap. This book helped me a lot.

This book is absolutely essential reading for everybody who wants to be informed about both historical and contemporary politics. Heywood devotes clear, detailed, and well-written chapters to each of the major political philosophies.

Great introduction to ideologies and a smattering of history. Done methodically, covering most of the common political 'isms'. Learned a lot. Nice base from which to do further reading since virtually every major figure is mentioned. Curiosity: the author sure does like the word 'nevertheless'.

Great supplementary textbook for my comparative politics class.
Very good intro to political ideologies. Very dense though. Takes a long time to read.
Good book
Great book for beginners. A must read for everyone who wants to make sense of social and political environment arounh him/her.
This book needs a complete revision following the events over the last ten years or so. The conventional wisdom has been shot to hell. Neoliberalism has failed. Socialism is no longer dead. China - communist country - is now the beacon of hope for the world.

What do you call a introductory book of 287 pages which has super high density of information per page and the paragraph? Moreover keeping the historical context of politics so that when you read the book, you not only know about different political ideologies (and minute differences between different sub-ideologies among them) and their perspectives at looking at the world but you also get an idea of why some ideologies emerge in different time frames. Such as rise of reactionary communism afte...more

Well organized. A clear and straightforward introduction to the major ideologies with recommended reading lists for each: liberalism, conservatism, socialism, nationalism, anarchism, fascism, feminism, ecologism, religious fundamentalism, and multiculturalism. Many side-bars on key concepts (e.g., gender, culture, authority), important thinkers and various '-isms.' Interesting small diagrams showing key tensions between various groups (e.g.,third way vs social democracy, paternalist conservatism...more

A perfect introduction to ideologies. Andrew Heywood always writes in a highly readable and easy to understand manner. This is the book for anyone who is confused by all those different isms. The history of ideologies is briefly explained, then examining the core concepts and the end of each chapter contains suggestions for further reading. Heywood, as he does his other books, remains neutral all the time. That is difficult to do when everyone has their own biases and for a subject as polarizing...more

I found Political Ideologies to be very useful when I first set out to learn about the major ideologies. The book is broken up into Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Anarchism, Nationalism, Fascism, Feminism, Environmentalism and Fundamentalism. It does repeat itself a lot but if you're approaching this as an ameteur student then that's not a bad thing. I especially like how Heywood contrasts the opposing poles of each ideology - for example social anarcism and individualist anarchism. Very t...more

Given to me as a gift by my Intern roommate from Slovakia, it is a welcome addition to the non-poetry/literature collection in my library. As another reviewer said, there might be some aspects that have been changed by recent historical events, but the basic premises of each political stance are still valid. The book simply reinforced my belief in social democracy. I would recommend it, especially any later editions. It is clear, to the point, and neither too verbose nor lacking.

Clear, well-organized, simple (maybe a bit too simple) explanation of key terms, debates, concepts and discourses of political ideologies. Ideal for introductory classes in politics, but cannot be the sole course material - might be too encyclopedic and abstract without exposure to primary sources.
A very good introduction to ideologies as well as ideology itself. However, my inner grammar nazi was repulsed by the amount of mistakes made. Notable examples include 'it can be view' and 'scoialism'. Whoever's responsible for this clearly has been sleeping on the job.

I read this book for a class, so the information that was brought out of this book was later reinforced in the classroom. It isn't a very dense read. It brings out recurring topics that are easy to pick up on. I wouldn't rely 100% on this book as it isn't able to go in depth on current topics.
As an A-Level Politics student, this went above and beyond what I needed for my Political Ideologies exam. It is a great insight and really well written. A book I intend to keep and return to for many years to come.
Anarchism
Despite the writer's opinions , the analysis of most discussed ( ideologies ) was good , specially ( liberalism , conservatism , socialism , ecologism ) , I also liked the alphabetically arranged glossary of terms at the end .
Good breakdown of all the major political ideologies.
Extremely useful for studying A2 Government and Politics. It could be a little more concise but the fact it is divided into sections helps a lot in reading what is a very informative book.
